Ultra-Processed Foods: Why Convenience Keeps Us Hooked

🍕The Paradox of Convenience, why good food is harder than ever to find, and how the same effects of fast-food are creeping into life

Hello friends,

My family moved houses recently, and in all the busyness it’s been challenging to prep meals.

So we’ve been eating out a lot.

Thankfully we don’t do it often, because here’s something this week on processed food.

This week in building health 👇

How to Make Sense of Ultra-Processed Foods

Convenience often overshadows nutritional value in our fast-paced world.

Real food demands time to prepare and cook. It is a luxury many of us feel we can't afford.

I know when I’m overwhelmed and busy, I don’t think twice.

I go ahead and grab something quick and easy.

We often turn to ultra-processed foods for convenience, but they are loaded with added sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial ingredients.

This sets the stage for a dietary paradox.

We know whole foods are essential for our health, but modern life pushes us to choose quicker, ultra-processed options.

How Ultra-Processed Food is Really About Convenience

Ultra-processed foods are synonymous with modern eating habits, offering a quick solution to the demand for convenience.

Packed, ready-to-eat or heat formulations dominate our diets due to their ease of use, long shelf life, and palatability, rather than nutritional value.

Despite the health implications, the convenience keeps us hooked.

And breaking that habit reveals how complex our food and lifestyle choices have become.

The Role of Emulsifiers

The trick to making food last long is to use some extra substance called an emulsifier.

This let’s oil and water mix, which improves the texture and shelf life of your food. But the trade off is that these come with health risks— especially if you consume a lot of a long period of time.

(By the way, one snack won’t do you in. But we’re talking regular consistent consumption here)

New research suggests potential health risks from long-term consumption, such as disturbances in gut health and increased disease risk.

Why We Can't Resist Ultra-Processed Food

At the end of the day it comes back to convenience.

When you’re tired, stressed, busy, or overwhelmed— and you just need to eat something, no one is prepping a meal over 60 minutes.

They’re grabbing the quickest and easiest food they can find.

The convenience and sensory appeal of these foods mask their potential dangers, leading to a cycle of consumption that jeopardizes our health.

Why Few People Have Access to Healthy Food

7 minutes | Thin Lei Win

Only 40% of people worldwide can afford a healthy diet.

And it’s not getting better.

One thing that shocked me in this report is that I thought most people who live out in rural areas have access to healthier and cleaner food.

But the contrary is happening— fresh food is going to cities and supermarket chains are extending their reach to rural areas.

The result? Less people have access to clean healthy food overall.
